History
Jim Cullen is a lifelong Kentuckian who has worked most of his life in the Thoroughbred industry. As a teen he worked on a small breeding and lay-up farm near his home, where he did yearling sales preparation and general mare care. While a student at the University of Louisville, Cullen first began working with racehorses, serving as a groom and hot-walker for his best friend, who trained a modest stable of runners at Churchill Downs.

Cullen received his Bachelor of Arts in Communications (marketing and advertising) from U of L in 1990, and went to work in Chicago as a director of media relations for an international engineering firm. He returned to Kentucky in 1995 and began working for the Thoroughbred Times as a senior staff writer, where he primarily covered the commercial sales and breeding industries It was during this time that Cullen made his first investment in horseflesh. He scrapped together $3,500 to buy a season to a stallion named Pioneering for a foal-share with a friend. That venture resulted in a colt who sold for $55,000 as a yearling, and he was hooked.

Cullen served stints as director of marketing for the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders’ Association (TOBA), and the Texas Thoroughbred Association before he took a similar position with West Point Thoroughbreds in 2000. During his three years of service with the public racing syndicate, Cullen helped manage the racing careers of such outstanding runners as Ethan Man, winner of the 2002 Swale Stakes (G3); Sweet Nanette, a multiple stakes winner of $400,000, and Erinsouthernman, third in the 2002 Champagne Stakes (G1).

Since his initial success at public auction, Cullen has grown a clientele that includes a multiple Eclipse Award winner and several major breeding farms in Kentucky, New York, Texas and Florida. With the strong support of those clients, he and his wife Kristine – herself a lifelong horsewoman – founded Cullen Bloodstock in early 2003.

Using the skills derived from a lifetime involvement in racing, Cullen Bloodstock is intent on providing honest and professional service to help owners maximize their opportunities for success in this great sport.
